Clan Gatherings in Scotland The Gathering 2009 at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh was one of the major events of Homecoming Scotland. Primarily a celebration of the contribution that the clans have made to the culture and history of Scotland, it was be one of the largest clan gatherings ever witnessed and the greatest clan gathering to have taken place on Scottish soil. For the first time, an impressive parade of all of the clans took place from the Royal Palace of Holyrood up the Royal Mile to the Esplanade at Edinburgh Castle, in a spectacular and colourful show. The weekend also saw the 2009 World Highland Games Heavy Athletic Championships come to the capital. Set in the magnificent Royal Park of Holyrood, with its breathtaking volcanic backdrop of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags, the Highland Games showcased heavy events such as caber tossing and hammer throwing, accompanied by time honoured disciplines such as piping and highland dancing. There were a host of contemporary musicians, high-quality Scottish arts and crafts and a 'taste experience' of the best of Scotland's produce. As one of the signature events of Homecoming 2009, the Clan Gathering and Highland Games was for many, a highlight of their 2009 visit to Scotland ! Visiting Scotland soon, or in 2014 ? It is not yet clear if another very large Highland Gathering will feature in the Homecoming events planned for 2014. But whenever you plan to visit, you can be assured of a complete programme of Highland Games taking place every summer in Scotland. The Scottish Highland Games Association can provide full details : For a good overview of another very large Highland Gathering (down under) and links to other Highland Games : www.highlandsnsw.com.au/brigadoon
